Transbantu Association Zambia (TBZ) is a national, trans- and intersex–led community-based organization founded in 2008 and formally registered in 2012. TBZ’s mission is to contribute to an enabling environment where trans-diverse and intersex people can enjoy their full potential through advocacy, education, empowerment, and engagement with policy and law in Zambia. The organization’s main focus is advancing human rights, expanding access to gender-affirming healthcare, strengthening community wellbeing, and building a strong, visible trans movement. TBZ operates across seven provinces and works closely with grassroots communities, civil society, and state institutions to promote inclusion, dignity, and justice for trans and intersex people.
Aims
TBZ’s main aim is to improve the socio-economic, political, and legal situation of trans-diverse and intersex people in Zambia. In practice, it also aims to create an enabling environment where these communities can live with dignity, access justice, and reach their potential.
Who we work with
Transbantu Association Zambia (TBZ) focuses primarily on trans-diverse and intersex people across Zambia, including trans women, trans men, nonbinary and gender-nonconforming individuals, and intersex persons. While our work is centred on these communities, TBZ also engages with the broader Key population communities where issues overlap, particularly in areas such as health access, safety, human rights advocacy, and movement building. Our programs are designed to address the specific and often overlooked needs of trans and intersex people, while contributing to a more inclusive and coordinated key population movement in Zambia.

TBZ’s overall goal is to increase access to rights-responsive public health, socio-economic, and cultural services for trans-diverse and intersex persons in Zambia.
